The requirements of the federal states for schools and daycare centres
You're out in the park with the kids, taking a field trip. Everybody's still kind of relaxed. But in autumn it will be tricky again: What if my child has a cold? Does that mean you have to stay at home? Here you can find the rules of the individual states. So you know what to expect when your nose runs in the morning.
While you are still using the last warm days for a trip together, autumn is already waiting with all the risks of the pandemic. We know that this brings a lot of stress during normal work. That's why we from the parents' hotline editorial staff have summarized the requirements of all federal states and linked them additionally.
Some federal states even offer PDF documents with clear information graphics for printing. Search for your federal state in the overview, get smart - and you'll be a little better prepared for what's coming.
Baden-Württemberg
- What if kids have a cold? Children with a slight cold or cough are allowed to go to school or daycare.
- When do children have to stay at home? Children who are clearly ill (fever, dry cough) must stay at home.
- When should I contact a doctor? If your state of health continues to deteriorate, please call a doctor. He or she will decide whether a Covid test is necessary.

Bavaria
In Bavaria, a 3-stage system applies. The local health authorities decide which level applies at the moment.
- What if kids have a cold? Children with a cold without a fever are allowed to go to school or nursery at levels 1 and 2. At level 3, children with mild symptoms of the disease are only allowed into their institution with a negative covid test.
- When do children have to stay at home? With Covid-like symptoms, kids have to stay home.
- When should I contact a doctor? No guidelines.

Berlin
- What if kids have a cold? Children with simple symptoms such as a cold or a slight cough are allowed to go to school or daycare.
- When do children have to stay at home? As soon as a child does not feel well, the symptoms become more severe or fever is added, the child must stay at home or be picked up and stay at home for at least 24 hours.
- When should I contact a doctor? If your health continues to deteriorate, please contact a doctor. He or she will decide whether a Covid test is necessary.

- When do children have to stay at home? With the symptoms typical for Covid, such as dry cough and fever, children must definitely stay at home.
- When should I contact a doctor? If your child has the symptoms, a doctor will decide if a Covid test is needed.

- What if kids have a cold? In the case of a simple cold, occasional cough or pollen allergy, children can still attend the daycare centre or school.
- When do children have to stay at home? Children with fever above 38 degrees, severe cough and flu-like symptoms must stay at home. As soon as the child has been symptom-free for 24 hours, he or she may return to his or her institution.
- When should I contact a doctor? If you experience symptoms of Covid-tpic, it is recommended that you contact your doctor or health care professional.

Hamburg
- What if kids have a cold? Children with a cold without any additional signs of illness are allowed to go to kindergarten or school.
- When do children have to stay at home? As a general rule, children who are clearly ill are not allowed to go to daycare or school.
- When should I contact a doctor? If you have a fever above 38 degrees and a dry cough, please contact a doctor by telephone. This doctor will then decide whether a Covid test is necessary.

Lower Saxony

After 48 hours without symptoms, the child can go back to school or daycare. But only if the child has had no contact with a person who is proven to be ill with Covid.
- When should I contact a doctor? If you have symptoms typical of Covid, a doctor will decide whether or not to have a test done.

North Rhine-Westphalia
- What if kids have a cold? Children with a cold and without further symptoms should be observed at home for 24 hours. The school must be notified. If the symptoms improve and there are no additional symptoms, the child can go back to school.
- When do children have to stay at home? As soon as they show symptoms of illness or cold.
- When should I contact a doctor? If there is no improvement and symptoms appear, contact the school or daycare center or doctor.

- What if kids have a cold? Runny nose is not a typical symptom of Covid. Kids get to go to daycare or school.
- When do children have to stay at home? Children with symptoms such as coughing, fever, diarrhoea or vomiting are not allowed to go to school. If they show these symptoms for more than 2 days, they are not allowed to go back to school until they have been without symptoms for 2 days.
- When should I contact a doctor? If you experience any of the symptoms typical of Covid, please tell your doctor.

- What if kids have a cold? Children with unspecific symptoms, i.e. fever-free with a mild cold or inconspicuous cough, do not have to stay at home.
- When do children have to stay at home? If the symptoms are more severe, they should not go to school.
- When should I contact a doctor? If the symptoms are more severe, a doctor should be consulted. If the covid test is negative or no test at all, the child may come back without fever after 24 hours.
